New Grammar

[edit | edit source]

Last time we learned how to form the present subjunctive with first conjugation verbs by changing -ā- to -ē-. Second conjugation verbs have their own pattern, but it's just as regular! For these verbs, we change the characteristic -ē- to -ea- before adding the endings.

Let's see how this works with moneō (to warn, advise):

Person Present Indicative Present Subjunctive
1st person singular moneō moneam
2nd person singular monēs moneās
3rd person singular monet moneat
1st person plural monēmus moneāmus
2nd person plural monētis moneātis
3rd person plural monent moneant

Just remember: where first conjugation changed -ā- to -ē-, second conjugation changes -ē- to -ea-. Simple!
