Summary

Description

Structually tilted sandstone in the Cretaceous of Utah, USA.

This is an outcrop of the Frontier Sandstone (Frontier Formation). The rocks in this area have been tectonically tilted - the beds are dipping toward the viewer. The Upper Cretaceous Frontier Sandstone is a coarse-grained, shallow water marine to shoreline unit. Marine deposits of Cretaceous age are widespread in western North America - they represent sedimentation during a sea level highstand. At this time, global sea level became so high that an ocean called the Western Interior Seaway separated eastern and western North America. The Cretaceous transgression was a result of relatively rapid seafloor spreading rates (tectonic divergence) in some oceans basins. This lifted considerable portions of the seafloor, which raised global sea levels.
