Facing Facts/Daily Practice Checklist: Facing Facts

From Wikiversity
We use several different words to express degrees of uncertainty.

Here’s a structured “Facing Facts” Daily Practice Checklist, based on the Facing Facts Wikiversity materials.[1] It’s designed to help you cultivate clarity, embrace uncertainty, integrate evidence, and challenge beliefs shaped by bias or groupthink.

1. Morning Intention & Belief Check-In

[edit | edit source]
  • Start your day with reflection:
    • Identify one belief or assumption you're holding today.
    • Ask yourself:
      • What evidence supports this belief?
      • What is evidence against it?
    • Consider your level of certainty.

2. Midday Practice: Exploring Objectivity & Bias

[edit | edit source]

A. Differentiate Objective vs. Subjective

  • Notice if what you're thinking or saying is based on facts (objective) or feelings/opinions (subjective).

B. Acknowledge Perception Limits

  • Reflect: Am I seeing the whole picture, or only my part of the “elephant”? (Think of the blind-men-and-elephant metaphor.)

C. Reality as Ultimate Reference

  • Practice checking assumptions against reality.
  • When you encounter claims or news, ask: How do I know this is true? What data or evidence supports it?

3. Afternoon Engagement: Dialogue & Evidence Exploration

  • Step outside your "tribe":
    • Identify a belief reinforced by your social group or background.
    • Engage in respectful dialogue with someone outside that group.
    • Listen non‑judgmentally and be open to evidence-based perspective shifts.
  • Interpret and evaluate evidence:

4. Evening Reflection & Integration

  • Reflect on the day with these prompts:
    1. Belief Evaluation: Did you question any deeply held assumptions today? What did you learn?
    2. Perceptions vs. Reality: Where did perception mislead or cloud judgment?
    3. Dialogue Impact: Did engaging across viewpoints change your understanding?
    4. Evidence Awareness: Where did evidence challenge or reinforce your views?
    5. Next Steps: Which area will you explore further tomorrow?
