On November 19, 2006, Nintendo released their console, the Nintendo Wii. Its success with motion captivity and unique game features showed promising technology that would later be expanded upon in the later console, the Nintendo Switch. The Wii also brought the console avatars, the Miis, which allowed for character customizations that would appear within games such as Wii Sports games and the Mii Plaza, where the Miis would be found. These Miis have become well known characters from Nintendo and continued to follow the brand through different consoles.

The Wii remote controllers relied on AA batteries to maintain power and allowed wireless connection while also serving as a compact design. With the infrared LEDs the Wii was able to track the position of the remote and remote orientation with a sensor bar to receive the frequencies[1] . Similarly with the Nintendo Switch, the joy cons rely on gyroscopes and accelerometers to track the orientation of the controllers[2] . However, the infrared LEDs that were paired with the sensor bar with the Wii were left behind. Instead the right joycon for the Nintendo Switch has an infrared sensor which serves different purposes with motion control and specific game controls. The Switch also utilizes bluetooth connection to connect the controllers to the console wirelessly. Paired with the portability of the Wii U, the Switch improved the motion capture technology from the Wii for its design.

Fitness

[edit | edit source]

Well known for the motion caption sensors, the Nintendo Wii created games that encouraged movement and physical activity. One of the most notable games to do such on the Wii were the Wii Fitness games. Researchers studying the effectiveness of the Wii Sports workout found, "Wii boxing may be used as a viable alternative to traditional cardiorespiratory training"[3]. In 2019, the Nintendo Switch released the game, Ring Fit Adventure. The game used the motion capture in the joy cons, similarly to the Wii remote and Wii balance board to calibrate with the user to track their progress. While the balance board tracked the user's weight, the Switch joy cons tracked the user's pulse using the infrared sensor. Then, in 2022, Nintendo released the Nintendo Switch Sports which paralleled Wii Sports as the Switch equivalent with Takayuki Shimamura as the lead developer as well as the former developer of Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort[4]. The games consist of multiple sports mini games where the player uses the built in motion controls to perform actions within the game such as using the provided leg strap to track the motions of kicking a soccer ball[5]. The switch took the core ideas from the Wii Sports games (i.e. Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, etc.) and added physical movement in order to play the game in order to keep the appeal and entertainment. Hiroshi Matsunaga, the lead director of the Wii Fit, answered questions regarding the creation of the Wii Fit. When asked about the usage of Miis within the game Matsunaga responded, “The realism of Jogging really came out for me when I registered the Miis of everyone in my family. It makes you feel good when you see your family members pop up during Jogging,”[6] .

The Miis repeated appearance in the games became a staple of the Wii and continued to reappear in future consoles. In 2017, Nintendo released Miitopia, on the Switch which utilizes the customizable characters that were brought by the Wii. These characters were then used to create custom characters into the RPG world, quickly becoming popular for the expansion of the previous character creation menu from the Wii, allowing players to have more creative freedom. In 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch previews three customizable characters, Mii gunner, Mii melee, and Mii brawler, as playable characters. In March 2025, Nintendo announced in their Nintendo Direct that the predecessor of Tomodachi Life, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, was announced for its release in 2026[7].
