Cyrus the Great

Cyrus the Great was the Persian king where the captivity of the Jews ended. He was prompted by Yahweh to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and invite the Jews to return. Some Jewish leaders look at him as the Messiah sent from Yahweh. When authorities tried to question what right the Jews had to rebuild the temple, they referred to the decree of Cyrus (edict of Cyrus). There is no exactly known reason for Cyrus’s release of the Jews but they look at his actions were intended to serve the disperse Jewish communities and he would see to the reparation of the Jewish people and rebuilding of the their city.
