9/11 was a catastrophic event that occured on September 11, 2001 when 4 planes attacked US soil (2 planes hitting the World Trade Center in NYC, 1 hitting the Pentagon in Virginia and the other in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania). The attack changed US lives, security in airplanes, and westerners perspective on Islam (rise of Islamaphobia). The attack was conducted by a terrorist group, Al-Qaeda, and the leader of that terrorist group was Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the plot. Mohamed Atta is the tactical mastermind of 9/11 (and the main hijacker of the first plane that flew into the Twin Towers).
