Exactly, which is precisely why I am staying away from those pages at the moment :-) However, I worry about this strategy - I don't want something institutionalized which would be detrimental to this project in the long term. To complement the above, I have another idea which might be worthwhile looking into. It seems apparent that most of the participants on this project are fluent with editing in Wikis, and I suspect that everyone who is arriving here is quite well meaning.

There is not enough material for us to codify what exactly this project is about, let alone how it should be run behind the scenes.

In the spirit of "learning by doing", why not give the sysop bit away liberally during Wikiversity's infancy? As I understand it, this project is in an evaluationary period of 6 months. Here is my idea:

  1. Grant the sysop bit liberally to those who seem to know what they are doing
  2. Those accepting the sysop bit do this, know that it can be revoked at any time, specifically in 6 months.
  3. After the 6 month period, if this project is still healthy and well, we do a massive "Request for adminship" by the community, say, 2 or 3 candidates a week, in (arbitrarily) alphabetical order.
  4. We designate someone trusted by the community at present to use their discretion in giving out the sysop bit. It seems like there is one bureaucrat around, so maybe that would be the person to do this if they are interested.
  5. We also don't advertise this too much. Those given the sysop bit should not be craving for any sort of "power" or "authority". We are not interested in creating administrators who can be perceived to be part of a "cabal" or whatnot.

Assuming it would be easy to desysop everyone in 6 months (I'm sure it would not be too difficult to have a Steward do this, there are a few which are easily accessible on :en) there is good reason to do this. The reason is that we need to establish a core group of administrators who exemplify the ideals that we are striving for. I know, this sounds very ambiguous at the moment, but Wikis encourage a lot of observational and passive learning, in addition to active learning. I'd like to see good administrative skills passed down from the beginning. --HappyCamper 11:34, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
