Wikiversity:Talking point

Talking point is a Wikiversity initiative created in Easter 2010, with the aim of being a debate / discussion area for regular contributors, visitors, teachers, learners - all comers, really!

A topic will remain active for a period, perhaps a day, perhaps a month - or somewhere in between - the idea is to allow relatively superficial teaching and learning to occur, although with links to deeper resources, or perhaps the energy created to spin off and work on resources right here on wikiversity.

This is a place to ask questions, speak freely (forthright is good, but always with respect, please), and share your views on the matter at hand. Please don't edit others' comments, and please sign yours with four tildas. Thanks! Privatemusings 02:21, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

29th March - Perspectives on health care internationally[edit source]

You might want to take a look at Wikipedia's article on US healthcare reform or Wikipedia's article on the March 2010 act.

Living down here in Australia, it struck me following the recent news of Obama's landmark health care bill, how little I know about the modern US healthcare system. I did live in the US for a while, and always had private health insurance, but was lucky enough not to use it (I probably attended the doctors once or twice, but can't remember how that worked).

My reaction to Obama's act passing was relief and hope - it seemed to me to be shameful that so many in the US didn't have access to healthcare, and I've always supported the NHS in England, and the public hospital system down here in Australia. Do you agree with me that this is a fantastic step forward for both the US, and the world?

Here are some other questions I'm interested in asking editors from all countries;

  • Do you pay for healthcare?
  • roughly how much?
  • Do you know how other country's healthcare systems work at all?
  • Particularly, are you aware of a really good system in place anywhere in the world?
  • Hows about a really bad system? - what works and what doesn't?

I'll sign this post - but do feel free to edit above if you think the 'proposition' could be improved, or clarified etc. - and be bold! - let's talk and learn! Privatemusings 02:21, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
