[edit] Vandalism tools

I, and it looks like other custodians, haven't quite as present around here lately. I've noticed that anonymous IP vandals seem to be doing more editing before we are responding. One today made 30 (?) or so edits. Fortunately Adambro was around to mop up. S/he makes some excellent suggestions here User_talk:Adambro#Thanks, basically (paraphrasing):

  1. Non-admin rollback scripts: How can we get one of the non-admin rollback scripts to use here because it is a bit tedious having to go through all the diffs clicking undoing after checking I'm not reverting back to another edit by the vandal.
  2. AbuseFilter: It doesn't appear that WV has the AbuseFilter extension installed. That might help with the vandalism. Obviously not going to stop everything, or you risk inconveincing genuine users, but could perhaps be a useful tool.

Any reason not to just give him the whole kit and kaboodle? He's an admin on several other projects, so shouldn't need much in the way of mentoring. If we have trustworthy folks around doing RC patrolling, seems easy enough to just give them the tools -- especially since most of the sysops here aren't around much any more (me included). Not much sense playing whack-a-mole endlessly when a block button would be more efficient. --SB_Johnny talk 14:57, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd support Adambro for tools. But, we might also want to look into opening rollback to more people the way that wp did a while back. --mikeu talk 15:13, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I've nominated Adambro: Wikiversity:Candidates for Custodianship#Adambro. -- Jtneill - Talk - c 17:56, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Removing explicit content

Some of the spam recently was the "insert explicit image from commons" type e.g., on talk pages. At least one user has contacted me about that. What's the process for requesting oversight of such edits? And could we perhaps add that to Wikiversity:Vandalism and/or Managing vandalism? -- Jtneill - Talk - c 07:01, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

As a result of the recent repeat vandalism I added a couple of images to MediaWiki:Bad image list. This prevents them from appearing in the page history. (see [1] for example) For oversight you can go to irc channel #wikimedia-stewards on freenode. (requests are not made on wiki to prevent vandals from evading the response and to limit the number of people who notice the edit) Type "@steward oversight request" (again, don't post links to a page needing oversight in the channel itself, wait for a steward to private message you) I'm not sure that I would request oversight of a large number of pages with just an explicit image. This is more for someone posting personal information, threats, etc. You could also delete the page, and then restore all versions except the one with the image edit. This would hide the edit from anyone who does not have tools. For urgent advice, drop by #wikiversity-en and there will probably be someone there who can offer some solutions or workarounds. --mikeu talk 11:51, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
I doubt this would qualify for oversight... generally that's only used for cases when private information is improperly disclosed and needs to be hidden from all users (including sysops). You could delete that version instead.
Last time I got oversight for something the steward mentioned that it causes slight problems with the database. Darkcode would probably know more about that.
BTW, there are a lot of explicit images on commons, so trying to badlist them all would take quite some effort :-). --SB_Johnny talk 12:27, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
Agree, I would not ask for oversight for something that is only vandalism. Jtneill, the guidelines at meta:Oversight list "non-public personal information" and "potentially libellous information" as approved use for oversight. Another use might be to hide a username that contains libel. Deleting the individual edits from the revision history that contain the image is better, but can be a pain if there are many pages. That is why I Bad_image'd those two that were used by a serial vandal. --mikeu talk 15:31, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Problems in creating account

I tried signing up with a new account, but the system tells me the two usernames I tried are already taken (so I assume that I have a username already). But if I try to get a new password it says "no such username", which is weird. It can't be both!

[edit] Advanced Projects in Chemistry

I have quite a few questions - 1.I have submitted 3 other Chem Projects on Wikiversity AP Chem projects and now they are lost 2. What criteria should my writing conform to to get Wikified-I have quite a few projects of use to contribute 3.Where do I submit my writing each time? Sincerely Anjali (anjali@podar.net) recently registered the account "Anjali" on Wikiversity from the IP address 202.159.225.252.

It looks like you have made contributions to the page Category:Advanced Placement and Pre-AP Chemistry projects. Are these the lost projects that you are talking about? The material at that page should get moved a new name, because the Category: pages are use to organize materials and text should go to pages with names in main space like Advanced Placement and Pre-AP Chemistry projects. --mikeu talk 12:39, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Advanced Projects in Chemistry

Yes that is the lost content-is it wikified? What is thequality check for it to be wikified? I know that JTNeill moved my content to Advanced Projects in Chemistry- how do those link with this sitehe created? But I am still at loss or thoroughly confused on the entire logical process of how this is working. Cud u please explain? My main goal is to contribute content/publish towards the Wikiversity After content is uploaded -editing- section wise delegation of content-uploading of content how is all this process happening? SincerelyAnjali 14:55, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Anjali
