Thanks for the greeting user:ermeyers. You seem to have already learned the sheer power of a personal contact with other potential members of a community. Wikipedia contributer "maveric129" filled this role out magnificently at Wikipedia for several years and ultimately ended up as the Wikimedia Foundation treasurer for another several years. I believe he had some macros or other automated techniqes to help him find new users and welcome them to the community. He had a knack for providing links to useful information such as policy and guidelines applicable to specific errors he observed. He became a first source to turn to with questions by advising newcomers he was happy to hear from them and attempt to assist with finding answers. Depending on what area of community building you choose to purse he might be able to provide you with very valuable insight into effective methods and mistakes to avoid in online communities built around wikis.
