I put this on my talk page (still trying to figure out how to converse thru talkDouglas R. White 16:35, 17 August 2007 (UTC)) and in response to your mention of maths needed the maths (in my sandbox) for our InterSci/wiki (complexity sciences community and its Paris summer school lectures) and was practicing here then had my tech install maths fonts to our wiki, so I won't be usings maths much here from now one. Have been focusing energy there for the last month with our summer school running.

1. Taking the invitation to "be bold" seriously, I began copyediting. How do I tag an article as 'edited' or 'stub'? 2. The Portal has outdated notices on the BB: so what's the use of having it? 3. I applied to you because of your senority in the Welcome Committee: apologies for any newcomer gaffs. NB Help and Tour for beginners should have more than one level - basic, intermediate, advanced - to make it truely accessible for everyone. I'm like the kid let loose in the candy store, who wants to sample everything but doesn't have time to read all the descriptions. WV is overwhelming in conception and scope!

1. Thanks for 'stub' and 'history'; they will be put to semi-immediate use.

2. I don't know enough about what's going on to update community notices, and I don't speed read; the best I can do is spot some discrepancies.

3. The first version of this letter got lost in pasting to your talk page (my inexperience), but it lead to an insight. According to one of the chat pages the bulk of 'wikians' are white, male, forty-something, degreed computer-nerds. I am none of these things. At first I was going to suggest a Windows '95/'97 type tutorial for beginners, where the user is taken step by step through demonstrations and exercises ; i.e. a controlled environment, a beginners' wading pool until they could jump into the deep end. THEN the underlying difference hit me: 'wikians' by and large have prior experience in programming whereas the average user (me) is accustomed to working with limited, pre-programed options. In other words I'm intimidated by the wealth of options, and that despite a good command of English and being computer friendly!

Both provide too much and too little information to be really helpful" Thanks - do you have specific ideas for how it could be improved... Yes: create a visual 'map of the campus' introduction. Mark “Home page” in the center of a large circle with “You are here” underneath it. Then group various options around the circle: Community, Tools, Communications, Resources, Mission Statement. Each time an option is pushed it becomes the name of the next circle with 'you are here' under that. I can't be more specific because I still don't know/understand what does what to whom with which. Its the best I can do.

4. I know its much easier to de-struct than con-struct, so I'll try not to comment so much. Meanwhile, may I contact you if I find myself really up a tree?

  • In the statement "I am none of these" I uncosciously forgot that I am white-skinned; somehow, I don't 'see' colour except as a cultural "tag". Example: I was talking to a Philippino I've worked with closely for 3 years when I asked him if he'd been to the beach, he looked tan. He laughed - I had never seen his skin colour!

You may be interested in a debate on the wikipedia reference desks - W:Wikipedia talk:Reference desk#Linking out - in which it appears that a user is directing reference desk questioners who have asked for medical opinions, to the Wikiversity help desk, where an ad hoc answer is given. You may wish to consider whether Wikiversity should put in place policy relating to the answering of legal and medical opinion questions, as has Wikipedia. I wanted to mark the page so I could continue reading another time and the top line showed no long-in: when I tried to log-in on it, I got something like 'no such user'. Only when I backtracked to 'about cormaggio' did it show the log-in. BTW, I came to find out how to open a sub-page, but got lost as usual. :-}? I am sending you this by ordinary email too, cc: to the Sysop at a UCLA wiki: at http://intersci.ss.uci.edu/wiki/index.php/Main_Page click "recent changes" and the edits by unidentified IPs

this hacker seems to want to go after my large undergrad class home page...but is using a program with

  1. different IP each time
  2. always new "name" at top
  3. automated substitution... e.g. 's become 'AAAAAs etc which doesnt occur in some pages hacked.

What did you do beyond "Protect" the home (and thus all Mediawiki pages) to prevent hacking?

Hi, Cormaggio, I have a humble request for you. Would you be willing to mentor me as a probationary custodian? I'm willing to help out all I can - and really just need someone to get me going and a solid reference point should I encounter situations where I'm not too sure what to do (although this shouldn't happen to much after reading the guide and being well versed in Wikimedia projects). I run my own private installation of MediaWiki so the technical aspects shouldn't be a problem. Hi Cormaggio. I got all but a few of those ID requests: not sure about three of them, but I'll give a shout to the commons/wikipedia people if no-one pops in soon. I'm amazed that some of those things are flowering, actually... England's climate is very different from ours (despite the fact that we're way south of you... I think Philadelphia is on the same latitude as Barcelona!)

I've set up a category marker ( {{bcpm/mane/11}} ) for you to use on the profile pages: see this diff for how it's used (more or less... I also added to New Hampshire on that one). I'll try and get the bot to come through within the next couple days to add "| Manchester, England = " to the middle templates.

Just fair warning, I'm about 1/3 way through switching out the old templates to the new ones, so if you run across a profile page that uses one of the old templates, let me know and I'll update it (unfortunately it's very difficult to switch them, but the current template is designed for robotic editors, unlike the old one).

Judging from what you saw so far, I'm guessing your best keys will be the October ones for SEPA (perhaps even September, but not quite sure). Bloom Clock/Keys/Southeastern Pennsylvania/October has the list. --SB_Johnny | talk 11:00, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

I just came here to comment on something you'd written that I stumbled across here: "Take the time to learn the material (if you aren't already an expert) and share (but do not COPY) it with others on Wikiversity through this course." Are you suggesting people can't people copy material here on Wikiversity?

Cormaggio, in that comment I am referring to verbatim copying from external sources. In the resources section of the EE_414_Integrated_Circuits page you will see links to many outside sources. I don't think it is OK to copy material from other websites without leaving a reference (giving credit). Since the material I have seen so far here on Wikiversity does not contain references, I am assuming the material is original.

I think it would be relatively easy for me to copy materials that others have developed. I have tons of notes from university courses. I think I would feel bad about dumping it all here on Wikiversity. These people have worked hard to develop a course that you will pay to go to. Is it fair for me to give their work out to world for free (even if I give credit)?

My opinion: No, you should not copy materials from others without their permission, and you should leave credit.

Hey again! :) We had said that we would do a discussion with you and the WE top guy, on WCR, and I think it would be a good "kick off" to a new bit of programming there. He says that Dec 15-20 would work, so I was wondering if that might work for you too. He's in Vancouver it seems, so that is PST (3 hours difference from me, and I think I'm GMT-5 now, so 8 hours diff to GMT). Would you be available at all during that timeframe, and could you suggest a time that might work? If we can't do a discussion, I'd still like to talk to each of you and maybe have a couple questions that you could pose to each other (or common questions we ask both of you) so that we can mix them together into a program. I found your Learning and learning about learning in Wikiversity interesting. FWIW, I've resumed my learning blog where I've started to reflect on the approach that I have taken so far in creating learning projects here. I'll also be documenting a new tactic for developing future projects that I'm working on. Some of these thoughts tie in with things you have written about.--mikeu 19:04, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

One way to reduce the w:churn rate might be a wv customized attempt at Wikipedia:Mentorship. My approach will be to work with a captive audience in person and walk them through a learning project. Maybe this example will give other editors ideas on how a project could progress. It might also attract people outside of my group to the project when they see the activity. Then I will encourage my group to work together amongst themselves on new projects. I'll be around and doing some stuff over the holidays, but things will likely not get too far along until Jan. or so. I'll take a look at that book ref. Thanks.--mikeu 15:55, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

I've been thinking a bit, and it might be good to have one chat with you first about what wikiversity is -- sort of a foundation and direction idea, maybe a bit about the pre project stuff. Hi Cormac, I really have to write the mapper from random timezones to UTC and back. 17-23UTC means 12-18EST. Tuesday I could do an earlier chat (up to about 17EST==22UTC). Wed and Thursday would work ok, but I might be "on the road" in the later half of those timeslots. I'm not sure if that would complicate things or not. I'm studying at a local College, There is lots of practical, but our workbook and text do touch on the Theories, and it's pretty amazing to get everything coming together and syncing up in a context.
Is your IRC issue a connectivity problem, or a client software issue?
