[edit] About Me

My name is Richard Twomey (tü'mē). I'm from Livermore, California.

I'm interested in learning about just about any topic.

[edit] My contribution to Wikiversity

I recognise that:

  • Simple things are easy to handle, but don't tend to give you much power
  • Complex things tend to give you a lot of power, but tend to be difficult to handle
  • Through thorough forethought the ideal mix between the ease of simplicity and the power of complexity may be achieved

Consider the products of Microsoft, Apple, and Google.

Consider the match, doorknob, pencil, screwdriver, scissors, and countless other commonplace tools.

Why they're popular:

  • They're useful and dependable for the most part
  • Because they're simple: There's no "learning curve" caused by a lazy engineer not doing their job well

In the same spirit, I think this is the structure which makes most sense for teaching on Wikiversity:

  • Consider a wide range of information related to a topic before you start talking about it
  • Make the bulk of the information direct and simple. Communicate main ideas; Not nitty gritty details
  • Offer the reader an option to delve into the specifics of a topic if they desire so
