[edit] MY PROJECT

"Children with the special educational needs"

[edit] Observations in a school

hi to all.I visited the school(as i had promised)and i observed several classes in which the teachers work with so-called "resource students",that's children with special educational needs. The integration of these children in Bulgaria ,in ordinary schools has been applied for about one year now.In Bulgaria, the integration of such children in ordinary schools is related to the need to work out of,as well as in class. Here comes the need of specialst pedagogues-resource teachers.A resource teacher can work with 6-8 children. Each child is worked individually,on individual programme prepared in advance. In the class can't to be integrated no more than 3 of such students. The "resource students" can be a children with: chronic illnesses, autism, lower IQ,children with different health problems( may be i've let pass some others variants).Psyhologist, logopedian and reource teachers compile a profile and necessary documentation for each child. The task of the resource teacher includes visits to the homes of the students,he or she can even be with a student during the class-on which way (for example),the hyperactivity of some children can be reduced. At the school that i visited the teachers also work with children from orphanage.Only 5% of them have parents. These children rely only on their knowledge acquired in class and during their work with recourse teachers. In relation to the use of specialised work with these students,i intend to descrybe my observations of a child with 60% autism, who wasn't able to stay in class or take part in the learning process even for 10 minutes. The same child (after 1 year ago) ,after the teachers carefully worked with it,now stays with whole class (together with the other children, gives answers to some questions. That child sings and draws, and the main problem whit it are related to coordination of movements-difficultes with writing. The main subjects on which the resource teacher work with the students with special aducational needs are Bulgarian and Maths.Of course some basic knowledge of the other subjects is offered to the students too.The most important thing when working with resource students(as teacher says) is to make them "literate" and then make them a part of society. When working with such children the teachers starting points is :what the child can do and what it wants, towards what it has to learn. The resource teacher works for no more than 2 hours with one child. As the teachers says "we should treat such children with love and attention and most importantly ,we must not consider them different from ourselves. The work ,with children with chronic illnesses is the most difficult because these children are often absent and miss classes and resprectively these children losed a learning material. Those are the information and impressions that I and my colleagues Bilqna and Sonia succed to compile during the observations of classes in which teachers work with resource students-children with special educational needs.Soon i will have some information on the possible achievments and difficulties accompanying the education of these children.

[edit] CONCLUSIONS

The exchange of knowledge about the integration of resource students will help all participants in this program by targeting and defining the problems encountered, and developing methods of successfully resolving these problems. The current research shows that on the Bulgarian part, the progress of this integration is going with slower pace, compared to the German side but the identified obstacles have been, and still are somewhat common and similar. It can be concluded that more time is needed for the integration process of resource students to be achieved, as in Bulgaria, for example this program is still in its first steps. We are confident that by keeping up our input of dedication, hard work and care , the continuation of our cooperation in this initiative, will eventually lead us to achieving its goals with firmly positive results.
