Leigh1small.jpg Greetings! I am Dr. Leigh Ausband, Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have been teaching and conducting research at UNCC for three years. My areas of research are in internationalization in teacher education, instructional technology and curriculum, and school district organization. Prior to coming to UNCC, I spent 24 years working in public schools as a teacher, school technology coordinator, and district instructional technology specialist. At UNCC students enter our program usually in their 4th or 5th semester in college. They spend 4 semesters in the elementary education program. They spend 4 years total in college, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. During their 4 semesters in the elementary education program, they take courses for three semesters and spend the 4th semester student teaching in a classroom under the supervision of the classroom teacher and a university faculty member. During the courses they take, they spend time in elementary school classrooms completing assignments from their courses. This gives them many different experiences working with children and learning how to teach.

I have two grown children, both married. My son and daughter-in-law live in Wilmington, NC, on the coast and they have a son and a daughter. My daughter and son-in-law live in Boulder, CO very close to the Rocky Mountains. I love to travel. In addition to having traveled through over 30 of the 50 United States, including Hawaii, I have also visited France, Switzerland, and China. A trip to Alaska is planned for this summer. Before I completed my college work in elementary education, I studied French. I can still speak, write, and read some French, although my skills suffer from not using it very much. In addition to my bachelor's degree in elementary education, I have a master's degree in instructional technology and a doctorate of education in curriculum and instruction.
