User:Erkan Yilmaz/PLE
Welcome to my personal learning environment (PLE) diary.
general thoughts [edit]
2008 [edit]
- 2008-03-15 the term PLE (I heard this term the first time from Cormac) goes out from my head to others
- 2008-03-16 starting this page
- Having a PLE means that anyone has access to private data. Does that bother me ? If so, I wouldn't have edited so far at all under my own name.
-
- Please keep in mind all my contributions at the wikimedia projects count for me as personal learning, but the examples below are in that kind special since also "more heart" from me is in them
- Letting lose of "your" data - it is possession of all now
-
-
- e.g. for the Thucydides notes: someone immediately fixed something -> so the advantage was: I have saved here time already
- but it took me 5 days to "release" it from my user namespace (could it be that I wanted
othersto get acclimated to it ? still thinking as "my" data ? ) - what are other benefits ? getting to know also other people(s ideas)
-
- I can access it from anywhere with internet connection or don't have to fear HD failures :-) Even if the wikimedia servers break, probably it can be restored from some other internet page
- Why I am splitting my PLE locations ? e.g. English and German Wikiversity ?
-
- I want also de.WV to develop more (content).
- Perhaps also because a larger outreach might bring the attention of more people - so we can learn together.
- Also, if you write the notes in another language it helps that you don't copy + paste so much. You have to use your own language + think more, also when you don't know exactly what one word means.
- the next step in the PLE: how do I change personally ? Don't just consider content. Learn(ed) from my mistakes ?
October 2011 [edit]
- I've also set up my own wiki in March 2009 to use as an instrument for learning, further info here
- interestingly though my wiki system is more restricted
- I require account approval (since spam is a time consuming thing when operating a smaller scale wiki)
- which is also why I recommended larger wikis (e.g. WV) to someone in teachingopensource since they were complaining about spam in their wiki (so they can rely on existing resources - be it for collaboration or helping them in terms of spam)
- interestingly though my wiki system is more restricted
- looking back at 16 years of online presence I think the most influencial time on: learning aspects, data, privacy, ... were influenced strongly by WV + its users
- edit 2012-02-13: federating was another boost in "learning more" in this area, see here
- also question to WV after reviewing my PLE page again: Wikiversity:Personal learning environment: I was wondering how/if/which people here still use/consider WV as a PLE? + edit a little the PLE page
- edit 2012-02-13: no feedback :-( + retry
- What's (the status on) personal learning environment (PLE)? (2011 October 22)
- started a new section: WV wide: provide meta info about learning, actions
examples (chronologically) [edit]
The examples below are what just came to my mind when thinking of the PLE - probably when I go through my blog, I will find one or two more.
Thucydides: The Peloponnesian War (English + German) [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- to cover the topic of the Peloponnesian War
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
-
- the learning is managed by reading mrself the text before the chat sessions
- during the chat I can see what I/we missed to read/learn
- I think so far I am/we are used to our regular meetings and how they are done now - it will be interesting how it is, when more people join - could it get chaotic ? We should also try audio sessions.
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- by chat (see chat logs)
thoughts [edit]
Started by an email in de.WV and it seems to have found its place here now - thanks to User:Daanschr who is also participating actively in the course. I thought at begin: reading group ? Too much time consuming, but guess what, I was wrong - it is fun and keeps you on track.
- 2007-08-16: created page in de.WV
-
- initial goal: to use as a motivation, since quite some long text
- 2008-01-19: hopeless to get others to participate more ?
- 2008-02-23: after this reading group finishes - continuing with Xenophon
- 2008-03-09: making notes publically available (in German)
-
- 5 days later: moving out of my user namespace
- 2008-03-16: we have about 25% of the text finished + 11 meetings so far
- doing another course at the moment, so I have to take time from this effort here :-(
- 2008-04-05:
-
- my vision
- I noticed a few times that my motivation decreased, this week I couldn't even finish reading all prepared text
- possible reasons:
-
- I guess because I have a new book now ? Romance of the Three Kingdoms (by Luo Guanzhong) - started making notes for it on de.WV
- Perhaps we have no fresh people in the chats ?
- spring weather ?
- solarflares ?
- ...
-
- 2008-06: some feedback about the course: Wikiversity:Featured#Thucydides: The Peloponnesian War
- 2008-06-18: the more I think about it, one reason emerges from the others that I made a break: while the course evolved over the weeks the actions to create "pages" became more important (+time consuming) than the fun/joy element.
- 2008-07-19: chat today with Daan - still unclear how to proceed further
- 2008-08-17: User talk:Daanschr#Thucydides: had the urge again, topic: w:Peace of Nicias
- 2008-08-18: want to read today also again more, let's see
- 2011-10-21: I've edited today on mostly all other topics here but not on this one - somehow I (still) have a little aversion against it (I'll ponder more why)
blog (in English) [edit]
1. learning goal ?
- I think my mentor JWS back then proposed it to me (something like a suggestion, to show experiences), or was it that I saw him using one? I was fascinated to do a blog in the wiki way (also that not so many used one was surely an aspect). Wanted to see how it is when everyone can edit it. What will happen ?
- (I wrote before: not so much in mind when starting it. I just didn't want to use my normal blog.
- but I think a small tendency of becoming important was involved - what should I say weaknesses in the past)
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- There were some edits - but nothing longterm
thoughts [edit]
- 2007-09-03: blog started
- 2008-02-03 - 2008-03-03: bored with it
- 2008-03-03: revived again for Composing free and open online educational resources
- So far no bad experience.
- 2008-06: Thinking to move slowly some of the blog posts from my external blog to the Wikiversity blog. I don't use it anymore much, so why waste money ?
- first one is this: When did you read ALOUD the last time ?
- 2008-06-17: What happens with umbilical cords ? cutting the connection: [1], [2]
- 2008-08-05: didn't write recently now a blog post, but I like to post at other's blogs :-) e.g. User:Thuvack/Mind-Logs
- 2011-10-21 I still find people should use more blogs here at WV (see here for existing ones), since it helps to understand (others you, but also in review you'll probably read your blog more than individual edits)
- here's a summary over ca. 5 years of software I used to blog
- and what should I say? I am a wiki child, so the wiki software fascinates me :-)
- suggestion: what can be added to "teach" probationary custodians
- here's a summary over ca. 5 years of software I used to blog
my user pages - explicitly telling that it can be edited [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- Experimenting - I saw this first at User:JWSchmidt's user page (September 2007). Before seeing it I had the feeling a user page is a taboo place. I see this "taboo thing" as an example of a thinking from the real world.
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
-
- Actually I also want others to learn with this.
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- see below
thoughts [edit]
- 2007-09: seen User:JWSchmidt's user page
- 2008-02-19: begin (de.WV)
- 2008-03-09: first change :-) Thx, Exxu
- 2008-03-17: also set up en.WV, en.WP, de.WP - more later
- 2008-04-19: discussion in: Wikiversity:Colloquium#Talkpage where then was created: Template:Edit page
- 2008-04-20: edit on en.WV Thx, Terra
- 2008-04-27: started learning project: Did you ever edit another userpage than "yours" ?
- 2008-05-01: en.WV Thanks Jtneill
- 2008-05-18: another user who also explicitly tells it
- 2008-06-01: discussion about editing user pages on German Wikiversity - hopefully this will result in some Wikiversity guidelines (see also: Wikiversity:Course protection policy)
- 2008-06-02: creating de:Projekt:Ein angenehmes Arbeiten in der Wikiversity ermöglichen to collect technical possibilities, leaving guidelines out for now, should be discussed in Cafeteria better
- 2008-06-21: [3], my comment
- 2011-10-21: it was and is a good decision - I had also much fun with doing this step
Asia (in German) [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- get to know more about Asia
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
-
- Adding links of topics I would like to pursue more
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- not done yet, except a comment from someone who saw the page: "Hey are you on a Asia trip now?"
thoughts [edit]
- 2008-03-01: starting
- The first effect when setting this up was: I neglected a little the Thucydides project, but I guess that is normal :-)
- Because of this was started: Romance of the Three Kingdoms (by Luo Guanzhong)
- 2008-06: Since a few months now I like listening to Asian radio stations very much. Before I listened to mixed music in English/Turkish language. What is so fascinating ? That I don't understand it (yet) and listen more to the expressed emotions ? I carry the wish to learn the languages and perhaps subconsciously I try to acclimate to the language ?
- one good tool I discovered was this service which helped me find true musical gems
- 2011-10-21 the interest in Asia did not stop (why? friends from those areas?)
- in regards to languages Korean feels more like home (than Chinese or Japanese)
- e.g. their usage of "no" (as e.g. in don't go -> kajima) by adding "jima" is like in Turkish ("ma" -> kacma) it makes it very familiar, see also w:Altaic languages
- in regards to languages Korean feels more like home (than Chinese or Japanese)
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (by Luo Guanzhong) [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- get to know more about the content of the book
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- wanna do regular chat sessions, also check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Three Kingdoms
thoughts [edit]
- 2008-03-22: created the page, let's wait what will happen
- 2008-03-24:
-
-
- wikisource: translation (into German) for reading group possible ?
- collecting links (at de.WV)
-
- 2008-03-25: translating prologue, see Romance of the Three Kingdoms
- 2008-03-28:
-
-
- I got a mail that the books will be shipped today :-)
- begin of translation of chapter1 on temporary place
-
- Chinese language (in comparison to DE + ENG) seems quite compact
- the Chinese names are unusual, hope that with more repeatition of names in the following text it will get more familar
-
- 2008-04-03: started notes: de:Kurs:Die Geschichte der Drei Reiche (von Luo Guanzhong)/Notizen
- 2008-04-06:
-
- started editing Wikipedia articles, see extend and create new articles in other Wikimedia projects
- while doing this, found another user interested in Romance of the Three Kingdoms (ROTK) and I got invited to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Three Kingdoms (see here)
- so, added myself to the Wikiproject [4] and use now the userbox
- 2008-05-01: started with the notes on chapter 2
- 2011-10-21: status: I have read the book some time ago, though I guess rereading will be good :-)
just text pages are boring - personal sound/picture [edit]
1. learning goal ?
- I'd like to create for a better learning experience more multimedia content - just written, static pages are boring.
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
- See who uses the files and how ? Do they like them ? What feedback do they have ? Do you get stalked ? Do you appear in a porno magazine ? Do you become a target ? You are considered narcissistic ? Who else does it ? Why don't others do it ?
thoughts [edit]
- 2008-04-19: uploading more than 120 audio files to commons
- 2008-04-22: video containing pages of de.WV with my voice (feedback)
- 2008-05-29: Image:Erkan Yilmaz as child.jpg
- 2008-06-02: info in text form: When did you read ALOUD the last time ?
- 2008-06-29: a German dialogue which is used atm in en.WV + fr.WV: Image:GesprächVorstellung.ogg
- 2008-07-26: a comment to a picture at Aesthetics
- 2008-08-04: Image:Erkan on horse.jpg (never let disappear the child in you)
- 2008-08-03: Wikiversity Day - happy birthday song
- 2008-09-01: Image:Img 0079 cut.png - It was an exhausting day and someone still brought a smile on my face. Where are my eyes ? Am I now fit for The Country of the Blind ?
- 2011-08: I tried to use more ways to get me more multimedia, but failed - I think the smartphones, tablets which are recently hyped may come with better apps to create such content
- 2011-10: looking back one thing I managed to do easier: adding pictures to my blog posts. Reason was: because I find a picture awakens interest than just seeing a bunch of text
Wikiversity the Movie [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- Let's see if we can identify a common vision, see here.
- Also it is again a new project I can do at WV - a new area. At the moment I will do the coordination and slowly increase into the various areas involved.
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
-
- Wikiversity:Chat, Teamspeak
- Reading online
- Identifying resources (human/non-human) to suck their knowledge :-)
- started already with Wikiversity the Movie/Learning from the past :-)
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- talk pages, Wikiversity:Chat, Teamspeak
progress [edit]
- 2008-08-21: new time frame for movie proposed: 15th August 2009 (the next Wikiversity Day)
- 2008-08-23: contacted users interested in creating music/soundtrack: see here
- 2008-08-24:
- introducing a motivational slogan for the preparations on the Wikiversity movie: "Coming soon to a wiki theater near you !" (credits to User:Darklama)
- searching for additional particpants (announcing at several places)
- Wikiversity the Movie/Tasks
- blog
- 2010-04-05: blog: I'd really like to make a movie, one day
- 2011-10-21: huge task, surely not doable alone - probably needs a motivation
What can I do better while walking in the wiki-verse ? [edit]
1. learning goal ?
- Most things on this page are about learning some(thing about) content - but with every action I do, I also develop personally. The following below is definitely personal info - but why hide ? Hiding doesn`t help (me or others). OK, in wiki it is not hidden, it always can be made visible again - but why explicitly show it off ? Don't I fear others can use this against me ?
- Visualize what happened in the past. Make it different in the future and best: now.
- As it says here: "It is about the P (P stands for people and not - pages or process)" - it is so easy to misunderstand someone in the textual wiki-verse.
- A notion which needs more: people treat text as if one still has the same opinion as back then, but forget people may have other opinions now. I think what is often missing in learning environments is a review of actions.
- I also remember this idea: Research:User editing patterns and collaboration
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
- Wiki communities should definitely use more (video)-conferences. Are you or I God(s) that you or I know what others think ? You and I just see a written text and start assuming.
- Wikis are better than using paper notepads. I can preserve my actions and review them easily when I give good summaries (to find later on)
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
- to others: please - really - at least use the offered tools - a simple one: chats: old blog post
thoughts [edit]
need time to look at all my contributions
- 2007: When in Rome, do as the Romans do - if not, then help afterwards: 1, 2
- 2007-04-26: blocking the wrong user (for 39 mins) - thank God he still stayed
- 2007-11: Please do not bite the newcomers: keep this in mind
- 2008-01-16: don't overwhelm/shock/irritate newcomers with my Wikiversity philosophy - everyone must make his/her own experiences. Later they will help me change my Wikiversity philosophy.
- 2008-01-17: there are better ways to welcome someone
- 2008-02-17: sometimes leaving my profession out of Wikiversity is better - WV is still young - no risk no fun
-
- 2006/2007: and definitely don't use it as your advertising platform (further info here)
- 2008-02-19: I don't quite remember why, but at that time in de.WV there was hot air. Sometimes people just need a thank you so the hot air can go away. Personal thank you's to: heuler06 (I remember I gave also another one, must find it :-))
-
- 2008-03-17: Should have given the thank you earlier
- 2008-03-07: a user wanted to do something at de.WV - but in the end it resulted in nothing - just talks - how could I/we have acted to win the user for Wikiversity ?
- 2008-03-26: started good, but in the end we had luck to get extended time. This should have had prio before own interests. If I say: "Let`s make a chat", then do it - damn it.
- 2008-04-06: It is about the P (P stands for people and not - pages or process): [5], origin
- 2008-05-09: I am just one of MANY - the majority should have prio
- 2008-05-27: Was this my ego or my belief ? still thinking...
- 2008-05-28: when looking back now: I am not sure, perhaps I should have written this on the user's page ?
- 2008-06-01: one edit can cause so much emotions + explanation to fix the situation
- 2008-06-18: if you do something then say: "I" or "me" and don`t generalize: [6], [7], ... (there are more examples on this page, just digg through the version history :-))
- 2008-06-23: this, just do it, done
- 2011-10-15: "talking about" than "talking with"
- 2011-10-21: reviewing my blog after 4 years
- 2011-10-23: see also WV wide: provide meta info about learning, actions
WV wide: provide meta info about learning, actions [edit]
1. learning goal ?
-
- see if it can be a more wider WV thing/approach (which in the end means: if people use this also)
- learn more about me: often you don't think so much about actions (no time, ...)
2. manage learning; managing both content and process ?
-
- by reviewing own actions + adding as meta info thoughts, emotions from back then
- this can help - also with other peoples meta info - to reconstruct actions (on WV) so it can lead to (better?) considerations at similar things in the future
3. communicate with others in the process of learning ?
-
- not sure yet, probably by their feedback + reading "their" meta info
- perhaps also when in the future some researchers can use this?
- e.g. reconstruct activity in some areas based on motivation, ...
thoughts [edit]
- 2011-10-23:
- this started with a chat some 2 weeks ago where we talked about projects which help learning (see a little summarized here: rebooting WV, PLE, more thoughts on learning, Review board)
- I think tools like summarizing discussions is also helpful for this
- since one will have to not take sides then, but consider "all" sides
- as well as starting blogs
- I think it goes into the direction of What can I do better while walking in the wiki-verse ? but I want to use it more to make it more WV wide
- and perhaps it's just an arrogant thing since people do it already? but I feel people are not too honest when it concerns themselves and to make such things public
- perhaps the non-visibility is a thing that can be improved? e.g. I could imagine people making comments on all places but it's harder to reconstruct later on when not collected at 1 place?
- another thought I had yesterday was: perhaps my (strong) focus on PLE will deter people more from this?
- therefore started this: Creating meta information
- 2011-10-23:
- I've started with this to reconstruct my feelings, motives
- I think also Learning from conflict and incivility/Erkan Yilmaz (2008 September) should be linked since the goal of Learning from conflict and incivility was to "...reflect on a period of Wikiversity activity..."
- 2011-10-24:
- todo: make more than emotions here, analyze more: emotions while reading an old chat log
- another aspect which I never so considered strong back then when writing something is this:
- the review of "old" things associates more than the facts to them
- I reviewed now some 3-4 year old blog entries
- (ignore the fact: that with a comment after 3-4 years the blog itself gets more valuable)
- this chat log (from 2008)
- I reviewed now some 3-4 year old blog entries
- when I said back then: "Well, I just edit, it's not important", that's not true. It's fascinating how you get into a time machine (as I said: time conserving aspect)
- also the emotions while you read these things are cool
- the review of "old" things associates more than the facts to them
- 2012-02-13: this does not feel to belong right now here, but a start with thought process
Emergence [edit]
to bed one (or was it: be done?) soon
- Conway's Game of Life
- Wikiversity:Tributes for Mirwin
- Wikiversity:Mascot contest
- A course on cabals
- WV:Chat
- Managing vandalism
- Wikiversity:Wikiversity Day
Topics I would like to pursue in the future [edit]
- try to find influence factors on wikis (e.g. growth, ...) see here - usage of a tool to get up to date data and then support these quantitative data with qualitative analysis (by a human?)
- violence/brutality in fairy tales and the perception of the reader of this and the (unknown) influence on the reader
- how would the wiki-verse be when there is no delete button anymore ? More happy or unhappy people ? [8]
- How about when anyone can delete ?
- How about when all participants in a wiki have or have not same access to tools ?
- Who is to blame (is blaming a correct approach ?) that people think (unconscious): WV = WP ? Is it some elements at Wikipedia (which is known far more than other wikis - and that they have and are and will influence (future) participants to only think in one direction only what a wiki can be ?) ? Is it human's own thinking/need ? How can people here at WV still overcome their unconscious thinking: that WV = WP ? Diversity (in opinions) is just interesting.
? ? ? ? ? ? [edit]
This section is created to limit myself (when viewing the TOC) not only to the above. That I let my mind wander a little more for more ideas for my PLE.
To Do [edit]
- read:
- blog: search for other PLEs
