When I got my computer science degree, "Compiler Design" was the CS course that partnered with "Automata and Formal Languages" in the math department. I took compiler design first only because it fit into my schedule that way but since scheduling isn't an issue, students should be encouraged to take the language theory course first. I have a degree in CS too and a special grasp of this topic, so if anybody have questions we can start the thing. --Jorge 22:00, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

The statement's not true: compilers are programs used to translate from a programming language (as Pascal) to a language understandable by the computer. The cause of the confusion may be that compilers are referred to as the programming language they translate, so a compiler from Pascal to x86 is called a Pascal compiler. --Jorge 15:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
