The first weather satellites were launched back in the 1960s. They quickly showed their potential and increased in their capability and sophistication. A trend quickly developed where a certain satellite design was settled upon and a whole series were then launched in subsequent years usually overlapping slightly in the time period of coverage but in each case more advanced than the previous.
