Jump to: navigation, search

The Sandbox Server is a project that aims to provide technical infrastructure for content development projects and other learning activities. The server provides a number of services, such as messaging via IM and mailing lists, file hosting, media streaming and even a disposable MediaWiki installation. All Wikiversity participants are encouraged to trial the services available on the server to see if they can make use of them as part of Wikiversity activities.

[edit] Registration

The Sandbox Server runs a number of services that Wikiversity participants may be granted access to, including MediaWiki, Moodle, Jabber IM, file hosting, etc. Each service requires separate registration in order to use. Your chances of being granted access increases if you can show a need to do things as part of a learning project that you are an active contributor to, that could not otherwise be done within Wikiversity due to the limitations of the MediaWiki software. Certain Wikiversity participants may grant access to file hosting, the most popular service on the server.

To obtain an account for file hosting, simply list your request below. Before submitting a request, complete these steps:

  • Subscribe to the email discussion list
  • Enable email in your preferences and be prepared to verify your email address with the user granting you an account.
  • Think of a username and password to use in order to upload and access your files. Doing so will allow your account to be setup faster.

[edit] File hosting account requests

  • Question: How do I get an account? --Clueless 00:41, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
    • Answer: Describe your plans for using the server at Sandbox Server/Clueless. --JWSchmidt 01:41, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
      • Follow-up: Done. --Clueless 10:01, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
        • Account created: I created your account and sent you the password. You can now login and upload files to the server. Please document your use of the server at Sandbox Server/Clueless. --JWS 17:48, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
  • All I had to see was "participate in collaborative 'learn by doing' projects," and now I very much want an account. Can I be added? Missclaud 07:31, 13 January 2008 (UTC) --
    • Of course, thank you for your interest, would you be so nice to describe your plans for using the server (see above sample request) ? ----Erkan Yilmaz (Wikiversity:Chat, wiki blog) 10:57, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
  • I would like an account. I am teaching myself programming but work very long hours and am not able to download any software there. This would be a great service. Justasqeeple 18:50, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Hello Justasqeeple, of course. Perhaps you would be so kind to explain more "am not able to download any software there". Where is "there" ? And what kind of software do you mean ? ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 18:54, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
At work I am not able to d/l any program at work (ie server client or progam editing software) and (after hours of troubleshooting and reasons still unkown) I cannot acess my FTP server outside my network. I have not been able to figure out another solution until this.Justasqeeple 19:47, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
