Multimedia (also known internationally as Audiovisual) is a term for various forms of data and display material including audio, text and video.

Digital multimedia is usually distributed via specialized containers called codecs (short for COder/DECoder). There are many Codecs available, some of which are 'open' or community owned/developed while other codecs are proprietery (requiring permission and/or royalties for use and generally limiting modifications).
