עִבְרִית

Welcome to the Hebrew Department at Wikiversity, part of the Center for Foreign Language Learning and the School of Language and Literature.

[edit] Goal

Our goal is to give you a basic understanding of Modern Hebrew (or Israeli Hebrew) through a few primers.

[edit] Introduction to Hebrew

Hebrew (עִבְרִית, iv'rit) is a Semitic language family and is related to Arabic and Aramaic. It is spoken primarily in Israel and is widely studied and known throughout the Jewish world. Hebrew is the liturgical language of Judiaism. It is the language in which the Tanakh (or Hebrew Bible) is written. The Hebraic script is written from right to left.

As an ancient language, Hebrew has gone through many distinct periods. We will be teaching Modern Hebrew, the version that was revived and canonized by Eliezer Ben-Yehudah in the 19th century. Modern Hebrew is a simplified version of the ancient language and uses Sephardic pronunciation.

[edit] Learning Projects

See: Learning Projects and the Wikiversity:Learning model.

Learning materials and learning projects are located in the main Wikiversity namespace. Simply make a link to the name of the learning project (learning projects are independent pages in the main namespace) and start writing! We suggest the use of the learning project template (use "subst:Learning project boilerplate" on the new page, inside the double curved brackets {{}}).

Learning materials and learning projects can be used by multiple departments. Cooperate with other departments that use the same learning resource.

Remember, Wikiversity has adopted the "learning by doing" model for education. Lessons should center on learning activities for Wikiversity participants. We learn by doing.

Select a descriptive name for each learning project.
