When asked, "Well, what is Number Theory?", any instructor of Number Theory will say, "It's the study of numbers, my dear boy." More specifically, it is the study of the intergers and their special properties when used in a closed set. It has many applications such as check digits and acoustics, and is widely considered, in its higher level varieties, to be one of the most dificult subjects in Mathematics.
