[edit] Learning project summary

Summary:

Students use topographic maps of local areas determine contour intervals, gradients, and latitude/ longitude. Students then use latitude/ longitude to plot location on Google Earth.

Students will measure distances using graphic and fractional scales, interpret map sysmbols, and draw a profile of a topographic map.

Grade/Level:

9

Time Frame:

1 class period -55 minutes

Subject(s): Advanced Earth Science

Topic(s):

topographic maps and remote sensing

This project is intended to create an "active connection" between state standards and .....

[edit] Goals

Standards:

CA- California K-12 Academic Content Standards

• Subject : Science

• Grade : Grades Nine Through Twelve

• Area : Investigation and Experimentation

• Sub-Strand 1: Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other four strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations.

Students will :

Standard h : Read and interpret topographic and geologic maps.

Knowledge and Skills:

Process Skills

interpret scientific illustrations, use SI and English measurements, communicate and analyze data

[edit] Activities

  • Activity 1: Students role play in cooperative groups plan camping trip using topographic map as guide to create hike, predict distance using graphic scales, predict elevation using index contour lines and contour intervals, and predict gradients using change in elevation over distance.
  • Activity 2: Students use topographic map to define start and end point of hike using latitude and longitude; degrees, minutes, and seconds. Then students will use the lat/long to find location on google earth.

[edit] Learning materials

Learning materials and learning projects are located in the main Wikiversity namespace (i.e. without any prefix such as 'Topic:' or 'School:'). Simply make a link to the name of the learning resource, lesson, or learning project (these are independent pages in the main namespace, and sometimes subpages when appropriate) and start writing!

You should also read about the Wikiversity:Learning model. Lessons should center on learning activities for Wikiversity participants. Learning materials and learning projects can be used by multiple projects - and you are encouraged to cooperate with other departments that use the same learning resource.
