Data typically represents measurements that may be recorded as a collection of numbers, characters, images or sounds. The measurements themselves are not associated with any context, and therefore the data is not yet considered to be information.
The number 16 is an element of datum, on its own it has no meaning.
However when placed into the context of "John is 16 years old" the data becomes information.
