[edit] Proposals for restructuring the university faculty metaphor
Here is a bag of suggestions. --McCormack 08:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Create an "arts" faculty for things like film, drama, fine arts and the like. Move, merge or rename the "media" faculty/portal into/with/as the "arts" faculty.
- The "practical arts and sciences" faculty is simply too innovative to be useful as a navigational metaphor. I suggest we create an "applied sciences" faculty and move the "engineering and technology" faculty into this, as well as part of the "practical arts and sciences".
- The other part of "practical arts and sciences" needs to go into something like "vocational training", "technical training" or "career education". There is a lot of education out there which doesn't exactly fall under "professions" (which is too high a term, and not necessarily pratical). One might also merge this new faculty with "professions" into something like "professional and vocational".
- The "computer science" faculty sounds too technology orientated; educational needs in this area are about information and media literacy. I suggest renaming this faculty to "information sciences", "faculty of media literacy" or something like that.
- One day we might need a "health sciences" or "medicine and health sciences" faculty.
Resulting new structure:
- Arts
- Humanities
- Social sciences
- Physical sciences
- Life sciences
- Applied sciences
- Information sciences
- Mathematics
- Education
- Professional and vocational studies
- Interdisciplinary studies
- physics
