According to the documentary hypothesis, the Torah is composed from a number of originally independant sources joined by a redactor. One of these supposed sources is named the "JE source", due to it being considered a redacted together combination of the Jahwist (J) source and the Elohist (E) source.

There follows the reconstructed text of the JE Source, using the King James Translation of the Torah.

• The text usually ascribed to the Elohist (E) is highlighted in teal blueish grey (view in isolation)

Due simply to its size, it has been divided into 3 divisions of approximately similar size, for the purposes of easy downloading. These divisions do not knowingly reflect the content of the text, or the original divisions, in any way.

Part 61 - The plagues of Egypt

1 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh:

2 For with a strong hand shall he let them go, with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

3 And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh's heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.

4 Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river's brink against he come;

5 And the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.

6 And thou shalt say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee,

7 Saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness: and, behold, hitherto thou wouldest not hear.

8 Thus saith the LORD, In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD:

9 Behold, I will smite with the rod that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

10 And the fish that is in the river shall die, and the river shall stink; and the Egyptians shall lothe to drink of the water of the river.

11 And all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank.

12 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.

13 And all the Egyptians dug round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.

14 And seven days were fulfilled, after that the LORD had smitten the river.

15 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him,

16 Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

17 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

18 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed,

19 And into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:

20 And the frogs [came] up both on [Pharaoh], and upon [his] people, and upon all [his] servants.

21 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, Intreat the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people;

22 And I will let the people go, that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD.

23 And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people,

24 To destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only?

25 And he said, Tomorrow.

26 And he said, Be it according to thy word: that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God.

27 And the frogs shall depart from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people;

28 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh:

29 And Moses cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.

30 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.

31 And they gathered them together upon heaps: and the land stank.

32 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened his heart,

33 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water;

34 And say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

35 Else, if thou wilt not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon thee, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thy houses:

36 And the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

37 And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there;

38 To the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.

39 And I will put a division between my people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be.

40 And the LORD did so; and there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses,

41 And into all the land of Egypt: the land was corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies.

42 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land.

43 And Moses said, It is not meet so to do; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God:

44 Lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us?

45 We will go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he shall command us.

46 And Pharaoh said, I will let you go, that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness;

47 Only ye shall not go very far away: intreat for me.

48 And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh,

49 From his servants, and from his people, to morrow:

50 But let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.

51 And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.

52 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses;

53 And he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.

54 And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.

55 Then the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews,

56 Let my people go, that they may serve me. For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

57 Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field,

58 Upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.

59 And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children's of Israel.

60 And the LORD appointed a set time, saying, To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land.

61 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow, and all the cattle of Egypt died: but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.

62 And Pharaoh sent, and, behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead.

63 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

64 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh,

65 And say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

66 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people;

67 That thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.

68 For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.

69 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power;

70 And that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.

71 As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go?

72 Behold, to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail,

73 Such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.

74 Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field;

75 For upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home,

76 The hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die.

77 He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses:

78 And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field.

79 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven,

80 That there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.

81 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground;

82 And the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

83 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous,

84 Such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

85 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast;

86 And the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.

87 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, was there no hail.

88 And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, I have sinned this time:

89 The LORD is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.

90 Intreat the LORD (for it is enough) that there be no more mighty thunderings and hail; and I will let you go, and ye shall stay no longer.

91 And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD;

92 And the thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD's.

93 But as for thee and thy servants, I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God.

94 And the flax and the barley was smitten: for the barley was in the ear, and the flax was boiled.

95 But the wheat and the rye were not smitten: for they were not grown up.

96 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD:

97 And the thunders and hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.

98 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased,

99 He sinned yet more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants.

100 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go in unto Pharaoh:

101 For I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these my signs before him:

102 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt,

103 And my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.

104 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews,

105 How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.

106 Else, if thou refuse to let my people go, behold, to morrow will I bring the locusts into thy coast:

107 And they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth:

108 And they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, which remaineth unto you from the hail,

109 And shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field:

110 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians;

111 Which neither thy fathers, nor thy fathers' fathers have seen, since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day.

112 And he turned himself, and went out from Pharaoh.

113 And Pharaoh's servants said unto him, How long shall this man be a snare unto us?

114 Let the men go, that they may serve the LORD their God: knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?

115 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh:

116 And he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?

117 And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters,

118 With our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.

119 And he said unto them, Let the LORD be so with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones: look to it; for evil is before you.

120 Not so: go now ye that are men, and serve the LORD; for that ye did desire. And they were driven out from Pharaoh's presence.

121 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts,

122 That they may come up upon the land of Egypt, and eat every herb of the land, even all that the hail hath left.

123 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt,

124 And the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night;

125 And when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

126 And the locust went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt:

127 Very grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.

128 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened;

129 And they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left:

130 And there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.

131 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in haste; and he said, I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.

132 Now therefore forgive, I pray thee, my sin only this once, and intreat the LORD your God, that he may take away from me this death only.

133 And he went out from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.

134 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea;

135 There remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.

136 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven,

137 That there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt.

138 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:

139 They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

140 And Pharaoh called unto Moses, and said, Go ye, serve the LORD;

141 Only let your flocks and your herds be stayed: let your little ones also go with you.

142 And Moses said, Thou must give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God.

143 Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God;

144 And we know not with what we must serve the LORD, until we come thither.

145 And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take heed to thyself, see my face no more;

146 For in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.

147 And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.

Part 62 - The passover

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt;

2 Afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

3 Speak now in the ears of the people,

4 And let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver and jewels of gold.

5 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians.

6 Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.

7 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:

8 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne,

9 Even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

10 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

11 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast:

12 That ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

13 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me,

14 Saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out.

15 And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.

16 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel,

17 And said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.

18 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason,

19 And strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason;

20 And none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

21 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians;

22 And when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door,

23 And will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

25 And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you,

26 According as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.

27 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?

28 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD's passover,

29 Who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses.

30 And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

31 And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,

32 From the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

33 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians;

34 And there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Part 63 - The departure from Egypt

1 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night,

2 And said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.

3 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.

4 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.

5 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

6 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses;

7 And they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

8 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required.

9 And they spoiled the Egyptians.

10 About six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.

11 And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.

12 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened;

13 Because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.

14 It is a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt:

15 This is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations.

16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

17 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

18 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

19 For by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.

20 This day came ye out in the month Abib.

21 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites,

22 And the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee,

23 A land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.

24 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD.

25 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days;

26 And there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.

27 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.

28 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD's law may be in thy mouth:

29 For with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

30 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.

31 And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers,

32 And shall give it thee, that thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix,

33 And every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD's.

34 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck:

35 And all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.

36 And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this?

37 That thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:

38 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go,

39 That the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of beast:

40 Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix, being males; but all the firstborn of my children I redeem.

41 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes:

42 For by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

43 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go,

44 That God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near;

45 For God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

46 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea:

47 And the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.

48 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel,

49 Saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.

50 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way;

51 And by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

52 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Part 64 - The crossing of the red sea

1 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people,

2 And they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

3 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:

4 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.

5 And the children of Israel went out with an high hand.

6 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army,

7 And the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.

8 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness?

9 Wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?

10 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians?

11 For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

12 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day:

13 For the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

15 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them;

16 And the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

17 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel;

18 And it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

19 And the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night,

20 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud,

21 And troubled the host of the Egyptians, and took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily:

22 So that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

23 And the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it;

24 And the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

25 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

26 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians:

27 And the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Part 65 - The song of the sea

1 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake,

2 Saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously:

3 The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

4 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation:

5 He is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

6 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

7 Pharaoh's chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

8 The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

9 Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

10 And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee:

11 Thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.

12 And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together,

13 The floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

14 The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil;

15 My lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

16 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

17 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?

18 Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

19 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

20 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed:

21 Thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

22 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.

23 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them;

24 All the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

25 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone;

26 Till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

27 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD,

28 Which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have established.

29 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

30 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand;

31 And all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

32 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously;

33 The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Part 66 - Survival in the wilderness

1 And they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

2 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.

3 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

4 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet:

5 There he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

6 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God,

7 And wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes,

8 I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

9 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you;

10 And the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

11 And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in;

12 And it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

13 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

14 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

15 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

16 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days;

17 Abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

18 So the people rested on the seventh day.

19 [And] they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

Part 67 - The waters of Meribah

1 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink.

2 And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses,

4 And said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

5 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

6 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel;

7 And thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

8 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb;

9 And thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.

10 And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

11 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel,

12 And because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Part 68 - Amalek

1 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

2 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek:

3 To morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

4 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

5 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

6 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon;

7 And Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side;

8 And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

9 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua:

11 For I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

12 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

13 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Part 69 - Jethro

1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people,

2 And that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;

3 Then Jethro, Moses' father in law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

4 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

5 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

6 And Jethro, Moses' father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

7 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

8 And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him;

9 And they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

10 And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake,

11 And all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.

12 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

13 And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians,

14 And out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

15 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

16 And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God:

17 And Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God.

18 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people:

19 And the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

20 And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people?

21 Why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

22 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

23 When they have a matter, they come unto me;

24 And I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

25 And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

26 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee:

27 For this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

28 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee:

29 Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

30 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

31 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness;

32 And place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

33 And let them judge the people at all seasons:

34 And it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge:

35 So shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

36 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure,

37 And all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

38 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

39 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people,

40 Rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

41 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

42 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

Part 70 - The arrival at Sinai

1 And there Israel camped before the mount.

2 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain,

3 Saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.

5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant,

6 Then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

7 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.

8 These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

9 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him.

10 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do.

11 And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud,

13 That the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever.

14 And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,

16 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

17 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about,

18 Saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it:

19 Whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:

20 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live:

21 When the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

22 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

23 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

24 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount,

25 And the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

26 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

27 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire:

28 And the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

29 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

30 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount:

31 And the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

32 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

33 And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them

34 And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai:

35 For thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

36 And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee:

37 But let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.

38 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.

39 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking:

40 And when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

41 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

42 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

43 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

Part 71 - The covenant

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

2 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

3 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen:

4 In all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

5 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

6 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

7 Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.

8 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

9 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.

10 If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters;

11 The wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself.

12 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free:

13 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post;

14 And his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

15 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

16 If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed:

17 To sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.

18 And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

19 If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.

20 And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

21 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

22 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

23 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

24 And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

25 And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

26 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

27 And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:

28 If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit:

29 Only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

30 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.

31 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

32 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow:

33 He shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

34 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth,

35 Hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

36 And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake.

37 And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

38 If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die:

39 Then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

40 But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner,

41 And he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman;

42 The ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.

43 If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.

44 Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.

45 If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

46 And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;

47 The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.

48 And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it;

49 And the dead ox also they shall divide.

50 Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in;

51 He shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.

52 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

53 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.

54 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution;

55 If he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

56 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

57 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field;

58 Of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

59 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith;

60 He that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

61 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house;

62 If the thief be found, let him pay double.

63 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges,

64 To see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods.

65 For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment,

66 Or for any manner of lost thing which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges;

67 And whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.

68 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep;

69 And it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it:

70 Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods;

71 And the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good.

72 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof.

73 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

74 And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good.

75 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire.

76 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.

77 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

78 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

79 Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.

80 He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

81 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

82 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.

83 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;

84 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

85 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury.

86 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:

87 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep?

88 And it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

89 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.

90 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.

91 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me.

92 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

93 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

94 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

95 Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause.

96 If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.

97 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.

98 Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.

99 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

100 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

101 Also thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

102 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the fruits thereof:

103 But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat:

104 And what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat.

105 In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.

106 Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest:

107 That thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed.

108 And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect:

109 And make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

110 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.

111 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread:

112 (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib;

113 For in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)

114 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field:

115 And the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field.

116 Three items in the year all thy males shall appear before the LORD God.

117 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.

118 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God.

119 Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

120 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.

121 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.

122 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak;

123 Then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.

124 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites,

125 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

126 And I will cut them off.

127 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works:

128 But thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images.

129 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water;

130 And I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

131 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.

132 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come,

133 And I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.

134 And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

135 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.

136 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.

137 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river:

138 For I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

139 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.

140 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

Part 72 - The reading of the covenant

1 And he said unto Moses, Come up unto the LORD, thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel;

2 And worship ye afar off. And Moses alone shall come near the LORD:

3 But they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

4 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments:

5 And all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.

6 And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning,

7 And builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

8 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD.

9 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

10 And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people:

11 And they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient.

12 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people,

13 And said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

14 Then went up Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel:

15 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone,

16 And as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.

17 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.

18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there:

19 And I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

20 And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.

21 And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you:

22 And, behold, Aaron and Hur are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them.

23 And Moses went up into the mount, and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

Part 73 - The golden calf

1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron,

2 And said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us;

3 For as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

4 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

5 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

6 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

7 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf:

8 And they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

9 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.

10 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings;

11 And the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down;

13 For thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

14 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them:

15 They have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto,

16 And said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

18 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

19 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people,

20 Which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

21 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak,

22 And say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth?

23 Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

24 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self,

25 And saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven,

26 And all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

27 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

28 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand:

29 The tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

30 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

31 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

32 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery,

33 Neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

34 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing:

35 And Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

36 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire,

37 And ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

38 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

39 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

40 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us:

41 For as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

42 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off.

43 So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

44 And when Moses saw that the people were naked;

45 (For Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

46 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me.

47 And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

48 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side,

49 And go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother,

50 And every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

51 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

52 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother;

53 That he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

54 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin:

55 And now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

56 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

57 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

58 And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

59 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee:

60 Behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

61 And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

Part 74 - The condemnation of the Israelites

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt,

2 Unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

3 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite,

4 The Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

5 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee;

6 For thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

7 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

8 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people:

9 I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee:

10 Therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

11 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

12 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation.

13 And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

14 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up,

15 And stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

16 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended,

17 And stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.

18 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door:

19 And all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.

20 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend.

21 And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

22 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people:

23 And thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me.

24 Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

25 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee,

26 That I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

27 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

28 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.

29 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us?

30 So shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

31 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken:

32 For thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

33 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

34 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee;

35 And will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

36 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

37 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

38 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by,

39 That I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

40 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

Part 75 - The giving of the ten commandments

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone

2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.

3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount;

4 Neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

5 And he hewed two tables of stone; and Moses rose up early in the morning,

6 And went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

7 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.

8 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD,

9 The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

10 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty;

11 Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

12 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

13 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O LORD, let my LORD, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people;

14 And pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

15 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant:

16 Before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation:

17 And all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.

18 Observe thou that which I command thee this day:

19 Behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

20 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest,

21 Lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:

22 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:

23 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

24 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods,

25 And do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice;

26 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods,

27 And make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.

28 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

29 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep.

30 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt.

31 All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.

32 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck.

33 All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.

34 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

35 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.

36 Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel.

37 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders:

38 Neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year.

39 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven;

40 Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

41 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God.

42 Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

43 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words:

44 For after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

45 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water.

46 And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

Part 76 - Departing Sinai

1 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses' father in law,

2 We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said, I will give it you:

3 Come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.

4 And he said unto him, I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.

5 And he said, Leave us not, I pray thee;

6 Forasmuch as thou knowest how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou mayest be to us instead of eyes.

7 And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what goodness the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.

8 And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey:

9 And the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.

10 And the cloud of the LORD was upon them by day, when they went out of the camp.

11 And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered;

12 And let them that hate thee flee before thee.

13 And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel.

Part 77 - Food in the desert

1 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled;

2 And the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

3 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

4 And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

5 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting:

6 And the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

7 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely;

8 The cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

9 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

10 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

11 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it:

12 And the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

13 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

14 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent:

15 And the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

16 And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant?

17 And wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

18 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom,

19 As a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

20 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

21 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

22 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel,

24 Whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them;

25 And bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.

26 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them;

27 And they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

28 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh:

29 For ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

30 For it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

31 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;

32 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you:

33 Because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

34 And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen;

35 And thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

36 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them?

37 Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

38 And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD's hand waxed short?

39 Thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

40 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD,

41 And gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

42 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders:

43 And it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

44 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad:

45 And the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle:

46 And they prophesied in the camp.

47 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

48 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

49 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake?

50 Would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!

51 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

52 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp,

53 As it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp,

54 And as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

55 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails:

56 He that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

57 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed,

58 The wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

59 And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.

60 And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.

Part 78 - The wife of Moses

1 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married:

2 For he had married an Ethiopian woman.

3 And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.

4 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

5 And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam,

6 Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.

7 And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle,

8 And called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.

9 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you,

10 I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

11 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.

12 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches;

13 And the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?

14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and he departed.

15 And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow:

16 And Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous.

17 And Aaron said unto Moses, Alas, my lord, I beseech thee,

18 Lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.

19 Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb.

20 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.

21 And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days?

22 Let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.

23 And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again.

24 And afterward the people removed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.

Part 79 - The report of the spies

1 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

2 And see the land, what it is, and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;

3 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad;

4 And what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;

5 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not.

6 And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

7 So they went up, And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were.

8 (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

9 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes,

10 And they bare it between two upon a staff;

11 And they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

12 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

13 And [they] brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.

14 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us,

15 And surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

16 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great:

17 And moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

18 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains:

19 And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

20 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

21 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

22 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants:

23 And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

24 And [they] cried; and the people wept that night:

25 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

26And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

27 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:

28 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel,

29 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

30 Neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.

31 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me?

32 And how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?

33 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

34 And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

35 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people,

36 That thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them,

37 And that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.

38 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

39 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.

40 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,

41 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression,

42 And by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

43 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy,

44 And as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

45 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

46 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.

47 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness,

48 And have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

49 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

50 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully,

51 Him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

52 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.)

53 Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

54 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.

55 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.

56 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain,

57 Saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

58 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.

59 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.

60 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword:

61 Because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.

62 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top:

63 Nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.

64 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dweltin that hill,

65 And smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.

Part 80 - The rebellion against Moses

1 And Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: And they rose up before Moses,

2 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:

3 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey,

4 To kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?

5 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards:

6 Wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

7 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

8 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

9 And Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

10 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

11 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.

12 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up,

13 With all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit;

14 Then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

15 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:

16 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses

17 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them:

18 And they perished from among the congregation.

19 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

Part 81 - The short route into Canaan

1 And the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 And the people chode with Moses, and spake,

3 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

4 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom,

5 Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

6 How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:

7 And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt:

8 And, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:

9 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country:

10 We will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells:

11 We will go by the king's high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

12 And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

13 And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it:

14 I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet.

15 And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

16 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

17 And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies;

18 Then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

19 And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD,

20 And said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

21 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites;

22 And they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.

Part 82 - The Nehustan

1 And the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

2 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?

3 For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

4 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

5 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee;

6 Pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole:

8 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole,

10 And it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Part 83 - The conquest of the Amorites

1 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

2 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well:

3 But we will go along by the king's high way, until we be past thy borders.

4 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border:

5 But Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness:

6 And he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

7 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok,

8 Even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

9 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

10 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab,

11 And taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

12 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

13 For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon:

14 It hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

15 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh:

16 He hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

17 We have shot at them;

18 Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

19 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

20 And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

21 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them,

22 He, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land;

24 And thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

25 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

Part 84 - Balaam and the donkey

1 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.

2 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

3 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field.

4 And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.

5 He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people,

6 To call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt:

7 Behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

8 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me:

9 Peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land:

10 For I wot that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

11 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand;

12 And they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.

13 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the LORD shall speak unto me:

14 And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

15 And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?

16 And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me,

17 Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which covereth the face of the earth:

18 Come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

19 And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.

20 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land:

21 For the LORD refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

22 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.

23 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.

24 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

25 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me:

26 Come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

27 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold,

28 I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.

29 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will say unto me more.

30 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them;

31 But yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

32 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

33 And God's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him.

34 Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

35 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand:

36 And the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

37 But the angel of the LORD stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

38 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she thrust herself unto the wall,

39 And crushed Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

40 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

41 And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she fell down under Balaam:

42 And Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

43 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass,

44 And she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

45 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

46 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day?

47 Was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

48 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand:

49 And he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

50 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times?

51 Behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

52 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times:

53 Unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

54 And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me:

55 Now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

56 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak.

57 So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

58 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him

59 Unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.

60 And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee?

61 Wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

62 And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing?

63 The word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

64 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.

65 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.

66 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam,

67 And brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

68 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.

69 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

70 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go:

71 Peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee.

72 And he went to an high place.

73 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.

74 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.

75 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.

76 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east,

77 Saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.

78 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied?

79 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him:

80 Lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

81 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel?

82 Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!

83 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me?

84 I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.

85 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?

86 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them:

87 Thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.

88 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

89 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the LORD yonder.

90 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.

91 And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him.

92 And Balak said unto him, What hath the LORD spoken?

93 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:

94 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent:

95 Hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

96 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.

97 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel:

98 The LORD his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

99 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.

100 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel:

101 According to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!

102 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion:

103 He shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

104 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.

105 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?

106 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place;

107 Peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.

108 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.

109 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.

110 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

111 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel,

112 He went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

113 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

114 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:

115 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

116 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!

117 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side,

118 As the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.

119 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters,

120 And his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

121 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn:

122 He shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.

123 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up?

124 Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

125 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together:

126 And Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.

127 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

128 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying,

129 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD,

130 To do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?

131 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days.

132 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:

133 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High,

134 Which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

135 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh:

136 There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel,

137 And shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

138 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly.

139 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.

140 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations;

141 But his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.

142 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock.

143 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive.

144 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!

145 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.

146 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way.

Part 85 - The heresy of Peor

1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun,

5 That the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

6 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

Part 86 - The allocation of Gilead

1 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle:

2 And when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

3 Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight,

4 Let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.

5 And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben,

6 Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

7 And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?

8 Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.

9 For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land,

10 They discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.

11 And the LORD's anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,

12 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward,

13 Shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

14 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.

15 And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years,

16 Until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

17 And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.

18 For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.

19 And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:

20 But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place:

21 And our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

22 We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.

23 For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.

24 And Moses said unto them,

25 If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,

26 And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,

27 And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel;

28 And this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

29 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.

30 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.

31 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying,

32 Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

33 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:

34 But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord saith.

35 And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

36 And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,

37 And Bethnimrah, and Bethharan, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.

38 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,

39 And Nebo, and Baalmeon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah:

40 And gave other names unto the cities which they builded.

41 And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead,

42 And took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.

43 And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.

44 And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havothjair.

45 And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Part 87 - The death of Moses

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die:

2 Call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge.

3 And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

4 And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle.

5 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage:

6 For thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

7 And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.

8 And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho.

9 And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,

10 And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

11 And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.

12 And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed:

13 I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

14 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

15 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.
